The collaboration between Susan G. Komen and Marvel originated from a shared goal of raising awareness about breast cancer using a unique platform: comic books.

In 2012, these two organizations came together to create a series of special edition comic books that featured popular superheroes such as Spider-Man and Captain America wearing pink ribbons to show support for breast cancer research.

This innovative partnership aimed to engage younger audiences and provide them with education regarding the significance of early detection and prevention.

Dan Buckley, the Publisher and President of the Print, Animation, and Digital Divisions at Marvel Worldwide, Inc., expressed Marvel's pride in collaborating with Susan G. Komen For the Cure to boost awareness about the risks of breast cancer for both women and men.

In a press release, he stated:

"We have a unique opportunity to educate all our fans and raise awareness about the various ways to combat and minimize the risk of this disease by utilizing our comics and online presence."

In addition to the comic books, all of Marvel's superhero periodicals for the month of October included a one-page advertorial that educates readers about breast cancer.
