Sisters Network Inc.: Raising Awareness, Empowering Survivors, and Breaking the Silence

Advancing breast cancer awareness, early detection, and equitable healthcare in the African American community.

Breast cancer affects women of all races and backgrounds, but African American women face unique challenges in diagnosis, treatment, and survival. Despite advances in breast cancer research and healthcare, disparities in early detection, access to quality treatment, and patient outcomes continue to disproportionately affect Black women. Addressing these inequalities requires more than awareness—it demands education, advocacy, community engagement, and meaningful support for those navigating a breast cancer diagnosis.

For more than three decades, Sisters Network Inc. has worked to meet that need, empowering African American women through breast cancer education, survivor support, outreach, and advocacy.

Founded in 1994, Sisters Network Inc. is a national nonprofit organization dedicated to addressing the breast cancer crisis affecting African American women. Through community partnerships, educational initiatives, and culturally relevant resources, the organization works to eliminate disparities while encouraging women to take an active role in their breast health.

Stop the Silence: A Movement for Breast Cancer Awareness

One of Sisters Network Inc.'s most recognized initiatives is the Stop the Silence National African American Breast Cancer 5K Walk/Run, an annual event bringing together survivors, families, healthcare advocates, and community members in a powerful demonstration of unity.

The event provides an opportunity to celebrate survivorship, honor those lost to breast cancer, and emphasize the importance of early detection and timely treatment. More than a fundraising initiative, Stop the Silence creates a space where women can share their experiences, access educational resources, and encourage one another to prioritize their health.

By bringing breast cancer conversations into the community, Sisters Network Inc. works to dismantle the fear, stigma, and silence that can prevent women from seeking care.

Confronting Disparities in Breast Cancer Care

African American women experience higher breast cancer mortality rates than white women, despite historically having similar or lower overall incidence rates. Factors contributing to these disparities include delayed diagnoses, barriers to healthcare access, differences in treatment, and socioeconomic challenges.

Research has also highlighted the disproportionate impact of aggressive forms of breast cancer, including triple-negative breast cancer, among Black women.

Sisters Network Inc. addresses these challenges by connecting women with education, screening resources, and community-based support. The organization collaborates with healthcare providers to promote mammography screenings, strengthen patient advocacy, and help underserved communities navigate healthcare systems.

Its approach recognizes that improving breast cancer outcomes requires both medical advances and the removal of social and financial barriers that prevent women from receiving timely, effective care.

Financial Support Through the Breast Cancer Assistance Program

A breast cancer diagnosis can create financial challenges that extend far beyond medical expenses. Transportation, housing, utilities, and the everyday costs of maintaining a household can become overwhelming during treatment.

To help alleviate these burdens, Sisters Network Inc. established the Karen E. Jackson Breast Cancer Assistance Program (BCAP).

Named for the organization's founder and CEO, the program provides qualifying breast cancer survivors with financial assistance for essential living expenses while undergoing radiation or chemotherapy.

Eligible applicants may receive assistance of up to $350 toward a qualifying utility bill or housing expense, subject to program requirements and available funding.

By helping survivors maintain stability during treatment, BCAP addresses an often-overlooked aspect of cancer care: the importance of financial security, dignity, and peace of mind throughout recovery.

A Sisterhood Built on Advocacy and Hope

At the heart of Sisters Network Inc. is the belief that no woman should face breast cancer alone.

Through survivor networks, community outreach, educational events, and national advocacy, the organization continues to amplify the voices of African American women and draw attention to the disparities affecting their health.

Its mission extends beyond breast cancer awareness. It is about ensuring that women have the information, resources, encouragement, and support necessary to advocate for themselves and their families.

As the organization continues its work, its message remains clear: early detection matters, access to care matters, and every woman's life matters.

Together, through education, solidarity, and action, communities can help stop the silence surrounding breast cancer and create a future where more women have the opportunity to survive and thrive.
